Tomatoes are the edible berries of the plant Solanum lycopersicum, commonly known as the tomato plant. They originate from western South America, Mexico, and Central America. The Nahuatl word “tomatl” gave rise to the Spanish word “tomate,” from which the English word “tomato” derives. The Aztecs used tomatoes in their cooking, and after the Spanish encountered them, they brought the plant to Europe.
There are a vast number of tomato varieties with some of the most common including Cherry, Roma and Beef Tomtoes. Tomatoes are consumed in various ways: raw, cooked, in sauces, salads, and drinks. While botanically classified as berries, they are commonly used culinarily as a vegetable ingredient.
We are constantly championing for new varieties to ensure our customers have an ever expanding range of delicious tomatoes to choose from.
With Spanish, Moroccan and Egyptian tomatoes during the winter, and glorious UK tomatoes during the summer months, we have a keen focus on heritage and artisan varieties.
